At the Symphony

Sit back and open your ears and mind. Get Involved! If you want to close your eyes to concentrate better, do so. Watch the conductor. Can you figure out what his body language is saying. How do the musicians respond to these non-verbal instructions? Don't worry if your mind wanders. It happens to everyone (even critics!). Don't chat, whisper or eat while the music is playing. Remember it's impolite to leave before the applause is over. And it is also impolite to enter the auditorium after the music has started, wait outside until a movement or selection ends and then quietly 'slip' into your seat.

The Movements

Symphonies generally encompass four movements, the first moderately fast, the second is usually the slowest, the third is a dance-like minuet and fourth, or finale, usually brings the work to a lively or triumphant conclusion. Please do not applaud between the movements. When the music is over you can clap, cheer, whistle and even yell "Bravo" to let the orchestra know you enjoyed the performance.
